PROFILE: PASTOR LUCKY MOYO
(
Agape Missions Church Overseer )
The founder of Agape Missions is Lucky Moyo who was born in Nkayi the year 1960. He did his primary education at St Bernard's Pumula, Bulawayo and part of his primary education - Nkayi District. From 1974 to 1977 he attended Luveve Secondary School where he completed his 'O' Levels. From 1980 to 1984 he trained Mechanical and Electrical Technology in West Germany .
In 1977 Lucky Moyo was converted into Christianity at the age of 17 and attended different Christian Outreaches and Evangelistic Work and Conferences here in Zimbabwe . During his stay in Germany Lucky Moyo continued to attend church and his heart had joy in working for the Lord especially in Missions during School holidays. He usually dedicated part of his time to either going on Mission Outreaches or attending Bible Studies.
In 1982 Lucky Moyo attended Christ for The Nations Bible Institute in Dallas Texas for six weeks during his college holiday. In 1983 during college holiday Lucky Moyo worked with Mission Organisations in Skri Lanka and in India for nearly 8 weeks. It is during this time in India that he realised the need for him to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with his own people in Africa . It is when he visited and worked in places like Madras and South East India and when he visited Kalkart and the work of Mother Teresa that. felt God confirming a call for him to go back to his own country and share the good news of Jesus Christ.
In 1984 Lucky Moyo returned to Zimbabwe where he shared his vision with friends, relatives and fellow Christians, some encouraged him and some discouraged him as they felt that he hadn't completed a course in Electronical Engineering, would give him a better life but however Lucky Moyo was sure of the call was from God. He persuade his call in November 1984, the pastors of Assemblies of God where Lucky Moyo was fellowshipping felt over him, blessed him and released him to go into Mission Work as he felt the call of God and the initial destination was Nkayi.
It was not an easy task and there were many challenges during this time, for all this difficult time God showed himself faithful in all areas though being a very young man at the age of 24 years. People started to respond to the gospel and they started to see that God was at work with this young man.
The 1st church was established in November 1984 at Nkayi Centre. The initial community hall was used but in the following year a centre was constructed and finished in 1986. The success of Agape Mission Churches in the Nkayi District in the year that followed could only be explained as a miracle of the Living God. Generally traditional structures where used the chiefs were approached, the headmen, the councillors and all. leaders. Programmes were introduced and people were invited and the gospel of Jesus Christ was shared with them.
Many people came to the Lord and many villages had been established the church started growing and spread into the Midlands , Gokwe and Tsholotsho areas. Further centres were established and all churches were formed, part of Agape Missions in its early stages part of its responsibility was the social aspect then orphans programme was introduced, relief of destitute and assisting the less fortunate children completing their school. As the work was growing in rural areas it was evident that after secondary school most people transferred from rural areas into towns and they soon got lost because Agape Missions was not yet established in the towns.
In 1990 Agape Missions introduced or started their 1st urban church in Bulawayo this definitely was not easy as we were only used to rural set-up. We started by renting whatever buildings were available but it seemed very inconvenient as of our members came from the high-density suburbs. In 1994 we obtained a stand from the City Council and we started building Agape Mission Centre and Headquarters. In the year 2003. to the glory of God and we have all humbleness and gratitude, it is a joy to the Christian Community as it is a blessing in the high density.
Agape Mission Church Centre in Bulawayo stands as either the biggest or the 2 nd biggest church structure in the city of Bulawayo . The centre of young people, the elderly, the widow, the orphan and everyone is finding his or her purpose in fulfilling and worshipping God. In and around Bulawayo Agape Missions has since grown and there are centres in Gumtree, Sigola, and Killarney. Although when Lucky Moyo began there was definitely all the challenges.
During his past 19years of Ministry and founding of Agape Missions there are about 20 full time pastors, some have been trained outside (South Africa) and some locally. As Lucky Moyo worked with the community he faced challenges of assisting the underprivileged. He did not only see the spiritual side but he also saw the. side where he had sometimes to interact with the community and saw their problems and as part of his personal development in this.
In 1994 he obtained a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of South Africa . As Agape Missions has been growing as a church Lucky Moyo has also seen it necessary to develop all his Theological and Academic skills at presently Lucky Moyo is doing his last part of Masters of Arts Programme with Eastern University in Chicago , U.S.A and Cornerstone College in Cape Town , South Africa . This is a half Theological half Social Programme for church leaders and he intends to write his final dissertation on the subject, the dilemma of Evangelical Church in pre and post independent periods. Lucky Moyo is married with 3 children.
